I am thrilled to announce that I will be co-teaching a photography workshop inspired by the great photographer, Ansel Adams. This workshop, offered through Artful Journeys will take participants to some of the most important places in Adams’ photographic history, including Manzanar National Historic Site, which was a Japanese internment camp, Bodie, a ghost town in the Eastern Sierras, and of course Yosemite National Park. My co-instructor will be Carla Bohnett, co-director of Artful Journey.
The legacy of Ansel Adams and his influence on modern landscape photography is undeniable. His photographs of the American West are iconic. Many photographers have trekked through national parks trying to make images that illustrate nature’s beauty in the same way that Adams so masterfully created. Most of these photographers discovered that it is not a simple task. This workshop will show you how to combine the inspiration from Ansel Adams’s photographs and his story with your own creative eye to create awe-inspiring photographs.
As we travel through Adams’ footsteps, you will learn how to read the dramatic landscape and the ever-changing light and adjust your camera settings accordingly. We will discuss advanced compositional rules for photographers and learn how to create expertly composed photographs. Most importantly, we will go deeper and learn how Ansel’s images used space to tell a story. Adams’ photographs are undeniably beautiful and understanding how he combined technical expertise with composition and creativity will guide you as a photographer to make better photographs.
In this workshop, we will visit some of the most visually powerful places that Ansel Adams photographed in California. We begin in Owens Valley at Manzanar National Historic Site, home to the Manzanar Relocation Camp. Adams visited four times in 1943, photographing the camp and making controversial images at the camp that taught him the power of photographs. We will visit the visually unusual and dramatic Mono Lake in the Eastern Sierra’s, a favorite of Adams. The ghost town of Bodie is next and was well-known to Adams as he brought his family to camp there in the late 1930s. Then we shall make our way to Yosemite, the park that is synonymous with Ansel Adams. During our time in the park, we will enjoy a special session with the Ansel Adams Gallery, go on photo walks in the valley, and excursions to photograph Glacier Point and many others. We shall also enjoy a special dinner at the famed Awanhee hotel.

The workshop fee includes all accommodations, meals (3 meals per day), transportation in California, expert photography instruction from our two professional photographer tour leaders, entrance fees to the following state or national parks: Manzanar National Historic Site, Mono Lake, Bodie State Park, and Yosemite National Park. Also all museum entry fees, and teacher and admin fees are included.
